Shelly,

I perused through your blog after I came across a news story about your husband's recent accident in Mexico. My heart goes out to you and your family and we will keep all of you in our prayers at every hour. Your blog was so touching and I am so sorry for all your family has endured already. The story of your husband's accident caught my attention as my husband Michael sustained a spinal cord injury in October 2005 at the T12-L1 level after falling out of a tree stand while hunting. I am always looking on the internet for stories and information as it relates to spinal cord injury. While the days and months ahead will be difficult it is something you and your husband can get through, especially with the amazing faith that both of you have. I am so glad to see the overwhelming support that you have coming your way from those in your church as well as from people all over the world. Continue to believe in each other and never lose hope even during your darkest days. Keeping you in our thoughts and prayers constantly....

Dear Josh and Shelly,
We do not know each other, though we know many of the same people. I graduated from IWU with Jo Ellen Hummel and I grew up going to West Mich. Family Camp. (Shelly-you are a familiar face from there). Anyways, I wanted to let you know that we are praying for you all. Shelly, I wanted you to know this especially. Everyone feels for your whole family- mostly Josh b/c of the situation. However, sometimes, as wives we carry the burden silently.
My husband fell 25 feet from a tree last fall. He had a T12-L1 spinal injury, which was fused together with Titanium rods. Josh's accident is much worse, but similar in many aspects. We were in northern Michigan when he fell, and traveled by ambulance down to Saginaw (we are from the Flint area), still a ways from home. The wait is so long, the pain is so intense; and you just have to sit there. There is no physical thing you can do to make your spouse feel any better. We have two young children too. This is heart wrenching. Knowing I was missing out on so much and at the same time knowing I couldn’t leave my husband either.
It is amazing how the Lord puts people right in place. My sister took our kids (she wasn’t working at the time-a God thing)! Our church was full of support—even came and re-roofed our house after Todd’s (my husband) accident. I just wanted you to know that others have been in your shoes and you are not alone. I remember telling a family member through tears that I’m just not supposed to have to take care of my husband in this way (invalid). As selfish a thought as that may seem it was reality at the time.
I love my husband, and would do anything for him; it was just so hard to see him laying there in so much pain. I know that God was with us every minute though. My husband is now going through rehab and will be able to return to work soon, hopefully. It is a trying time, sometimes filled with such doubt. On the other hand other times are filled with complete praise for having my husband alive.
Although there will be a long road ahead of you and your family, know that above all…God is right there. (I am sure you know that already, sometimes you need to just hear it from someone else).
PS: Congratulations on Baby #3~How exciting!

In Prayer,
Carolyn Bishop and family
